On this day we celebrate the mahasamadhi (conscious death) of Neem Karoli Baba (a great soul and the inspiration for the Kailash Ashram) with a large bhandara (festival and feast). Neem Karoli Baba left his body on September 11, 1973, although those of us who know and love him feel his presence today. The date of his death has taken on a significance even for those who have never heard of him. Perhaps we can reflect that the date of 9/11 offers us the opportunity to choose between following a path of wisdom and compassion, or one of hatred and destruction. The bhandara is a joyous event, filled with warm company, great food, and plenty of hot, sweet, spicy chai (tea). Spend the day socializing with others seeking a positive lifestyle, and after dark you can join in the evening chanting.
